London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1940. xiv, + 330pp., b/white subject-portrait frontispiece, unpaginated halftone plates, intext facsimile script, plus two tipped-in, fold-out maps at rear (one undamaged, one poorly folded with minor damage on the foredge fold). All called-for plates and maps extant and attached. Book clean and square. Legible gilt title over colour-faded, splash-spotted, lightly frayed spine. Significant colour fade on several areas of red cloth boards, else mild shelfwear. Endpapers specked and tanned (rear worse), else minor textblock flecks. Previous owner's name to ffep. The biography of one of the great names of mountaineering: Edward Whymper (1840-1911). Feats extraordinaire, a near fatal fall, tragic companion losses - all and more . . . Contents include: Prelims., Preface, Author's Note, 15 chapters; 1840-1859 Youth through to 1906-11 The End, Index. Book weight approx. 770g. . First Edition.. Hardcover (Original Cloth).
