First edition, trade issue, one of two variants of the first state (no priority stated by Firmage), one of 164 copies with the pianoplayer illustration titled to the right - this is the smaller run of the two variants. Edited, with an Introduction and Notes, by George J. Firmage. Foreword by the Author. Blue buckram lettered in silver. Glossy illustrated pages with light foxing, else fine in age-toned unprinted glassine dust jacket, very good with small chips on spine head and short tear on rear panel on bottom edge. Inscribed by the publisher Deborah Benson Covington to author Malcolm Cowley: "For Muriel and Malcolm Cowley - With thanks for their warm hospitality & their appreciation of my modeling of the Viking T shirt on Nov. 21, 1980., Deborah Benson Covington (the publisher), 11-26-80, 22 years after publication.
