About This Item

London: John Murray, 1902. [First Edition in English thus]; Fourth impression, Third edition overall. Illustrated throughout with maps, plans, and illustrations, including a number that are folding and large. Thick 8vo, publisher’s original navy blue cloth, the upper cover pictorially decorated in gilt, the spine lettered and decorated also in gilt. xxviii, 469, (2 ads) pp. A fine and handsome copy with very little evidence of age or use. Tight and strong and clean throughout, a beautifully preserved copy. AN IMPORTANT EDITION, REVISED AND CORRECTED BY THE AUTHOR. As the author states in his first chapter, "...the purpose of the work is to collect what the monuments and books tell of the history of that most remarkable land and people on the favoured banks of the Nile, beginning with the first native king, Mena. In spite of all that has perished, never to be recovered, the last thirty years have brought to light an extraordinary and almost unexpected wealth of new discoveries." The publishing history of the book reflects its importance within scholarly and interested circles, having gone through any number of editions and reprintings over the years. The writing is welcoming and the vast number of illustrations, maps and plans especially noteworthy.
