About This Item

Manila, Philippine Islands: New Era Press. 1958. Reprint. Paperback. Good in Wraps: shows considerable wear to the extremities; a fairly faint coffee-like stain to the upper fore-edge; a couple of short notations to the front panel; heavy tanning to the text pages due to aging; mild rubbing, some soiling, and numerous creases to the panels of the self-wrapper covers; the binding leans ever so slightly but remains secure. A well-loved copy, structurally sound and tighly bound, showing moderate wear and the noted imperfections. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. (8.2 x 5.7 x 0.65 Inches) . Language: Spanish. Weight: 9 ounces. Reprint of the orginal 1908 edition. Trade Paperback. Jose Rizal was a Filipino nationalist, writer and polymath active at the end of the Spanish colonial period of the Philippines. He is considered by many to be the quitessential national hero (pambansang bayani) of the Philippines. Rizal became a writer and a key member of the Filipino Propaganda Movement, which advocated political reforms for the colony under Spain. He was in fact executed by the Spanish colonial government for the "crime of rebellion" after the Philippine Revolution broke out; for it was in a large part inspired by his writings. Though he was not actively involved in the planning or conduct of the revolt, he certainly approved of its goals which eventually resulted in Philippine independence. Rizal has been recommended to be honored as a national hero by an officially empaneled National Heroes Committee, but no law, executive order or proclamation has been enacted or issued officially proclaiming any Filipino historical figure be so honored. He wrote the novels Noli Me Tángere and El Filibusterismo (The Subversive) , which together are taken as a sort of national epic, in addition to numerous poems and essays. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
