This was first published in 1850 in two volumes; this two-volume reprint edition is from the Time-Life Classics of the Old West series. Each book in the series has been photographically reproduced from the original edition. The subtitle reads: ''Comprising a Voyage to California, via Panama; Life in San Francisco and Monterey; Pictures of the Gold Region, and Experiences of Mexican Travel''. One of the true classics of the Gold Rush literature. Taylor was sent (by Horace Greeley) to California as a newspaper correspondent, with the intention of writing a book. He describes his voyage to California and his stays in San Francisco and the principal gold fields. An accurate picture of life in the gold fields, and a very readable account.
