About This Item

Washington, D.C.: Government Printing Office, 1899. Rebacked with original spine laid-down. Marbled boards, endpapers, and edges. A very clean copy throughout. This book was made for Representative Charles B. Landis of Indiana, a member of the investigative committee. The first 143 pages are entitled, "Election Case of Brigham H. Roberts". Pages 95-108 are repeated. This is followed by "Case of Brigham H. Roberts, of Utah", from the 56th Congress, 1st Session, January 1900, Report 85, Part 1, 77 pages. Following are printed speeches of the members of the committee;, Robert Taylor, Charles Littlefield, Charles B. Landis, R.H. Freer, S.W.T. Lanham, and David A. DeArmond. These are then followed by copies of the Congrsssional Record, Volume 33, from 12/05/99 through 1/30/00. These are carefully folded in bound-in. Brigham Henry Roberts (1857-1933) was a historian, politician, and a leader in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He was a member-elect of the U.S. House of Representatives from Utah's at-large district. His seat was refused by the House because of his practice of polygamy. A prolonged battle ensued to claim the seat, and he was unsuccessful. This book contains the information as it was occurring. A very unusual piece of Mormon history, likely the only such copy in existence. Please see photos. Flake 9163 and 9165.. First Edition. 1/2 Brown Calf. Light to Moderate Corner Wear/No Dust Jacket. Demy Octavo.
