A memoir, a biography from literary critic and Professor at Oxford Univ, John Oliver Bayley (1925 - 2015) of life with his brilliant wife, writer and philosopher Iris Murdoch (1919 - 1999) to whom he was married for over forty years, and whose last years was plagued by Alzheimer's disease. Written shortly before her death, the book is about "then" and "now" --- a travel through life, time, and a marriage. On page 54, the very reflecting and eloquent John Bayley recalls the nursery rhyme "Mary had a little bear/ So loving and so kind/ And everywhere Mary went/ You saw the bear behind.

Synopsis

Elegy for Iris is a 1999 memoir by John Bayley, about his marriage to fellow author Iris Murdoch, who suffered from Alzheimer's disease in her last years. Bayley also wrote two more books about his life with Murdoch, Iris and Her Friends and Widower's House. In 2001, the film Iris was based on Bayley's book.
