About This Item
London: The Limited Editions Club, 1938. Hardcover. Introduction by Hugh Walpole. Illustrations by Agnes Miller Parker. Small 4to. Dark grey cloth with silver spine lettering and front board rules and silver and blind-embossed pictorial stamping. xv, 72pp. Numerous full-page illustrations. Near fine. Lacks slipcase. First published in 1751, this is one of the most popular and often reprinted of all 18th century poems and one of the few poems remembered of this Engish poet and scholar (1716-71). Twelfth title in the LEC's ninth series, this tight and bright copy bears colophon at rear noting limitation of 1500 copies (this #599) signed boldly in full by Parker -- whose powerful woodcuts it notes "were made by Miss Parker in that same church-yard at Stoke Poges in which the poet brooded over his elegy." Laid in is the LEC's 5½" X 4½" printed announcement for this title. NEWMAN 106.
