Philadelphia: Thomas Dobson, 1813. 2 volumes. 8vo. 220 x 140 mm., (8 ½ x 5 ½ inches). [2], xxviii, 472 pp., iv, 551 pp. Illustrated with 21 folding plates of diagrams. Full contemporary calf, red leather labels; spines a bit rubbed, small chip from the head of spine of volume 1; ownership signatures clipped from title-pages of both volumes. Sound and attractive copy in contemporary condition. First American Edition. Originally published in London in 1803, Cavallo's manual to physics and mathematics became a textbook for American scientists and editions were published in Philadelphia in 1813, 1819, and 1829. Born and educated in Naples, Italy Cavallo moved to London in the 1770's and began his research into the phenomena of natural science. His interest ranged from optics, to electricity, to magmatism, fluids, the atmosphere, chemistry and medicine and he maintained a lifetime interest in music and his essay on physics of the subject appear in chapters XI and XII of volume one.
