About This Item
New York: The Odyssey Press, 1967. First Printing . Illustrated Coated Cardstock. Good/No Jacket. 8" Tall. The nine works included in this volume represent, in my judgment, the different kinds of prose fiction published in the age of Elizabeth I, 1558-1603 ... My attempt has been to represent the different kinds in the right proportion. Since romance was the most popular form among the Elizabethans, five of the nine works have elements of romance or anti-romance in them." [Preface] The titles are The Sackful of News; The Adventures of Master F. J.; Euphues; Farewell to the Military Profession (The Apollonius and Silla episode); Pandosto; Rosalind; A Notable Discovery of Cozenage; The Unfortunate Traveller; and Thomas of Reading. 649 pages, with Introduction, Textual Notes, A Select Bibliography, and Biographical Sketches; plus xii pages prefatory matter. Covers are rubbed, creased, spotted, and discolored; publisher's presentation bookplate with two strike-outs on rfEP; text is strong, but intermittently underlined on about 40 pages.
