Story of Elmer Gantry, a greedy, shallow, philandering Baptist minister who eventually leads a large Methodist congregation. Perhaps the "best bad novel" written about the unholy alliance between moralism, media, and political power. 432 pgs in 33 chapters. Narrative follows the unattractive, opportunistic, lecherous Elmer Gantry in his travels all over the country, with attention to the many, often colorful and often pitiful people affected by him. Adapted to film 1960, starring Burt Lancaster (supported by Jean Simmons) as the smirking, leering lecher who tells off-color yarns with the same ease that he fingers the Good Book and shouts the name of Jesus.
