About very good in original blind-stamped brown cloth, gilt lettering, somewhat cocked and rubbed with prior owner name in ink, and dampstaining to volume 2.. First Edition first printing per BAL's points of issue. Volume II has inserted catalog dated January, 1861. Notably, BAL notes the earliest catalog as February 1861, whereas this copy's catalog is dated the prior month.

Holmes's first novel. His medical background, and job as a professor at Harvard Medical School, was an important influence on the novel's storyline, as the book is narrated by . . . a medical school professor.
