Gardenier was a strong and vocal opponent to Jefferson's Embargo Act. In true 19th century fashion, Gardenier and Campbell were driven to a duel over this point. Meyer 91.

Final two leaves are torn at the fore-edge with irregular quarter-inch losses, text unaffected, several old pencilled numerals and running pagination in sepia nib ("703-734"), a very good exemplar.
