About This Item
8vo, original boards, paper spine label, folding copper engraved map, paper untrimmed, iv, 134 pp. Spine rubbed with wear, paper label faded, hinges a little tender, but still firm, minor staining to boards, some foxing within, despite a little browning and foxing, the map is in very nice shape. Overall a very presentable copy. This work is a somewhat scarce title in the original boards, and with the map of the United States. Collins indicates in his preface that this is an "enlarged edition", which will give the emigrant an accurate picture of trade, commerce, climate, agriculture and geography of the still relatively new nation. Collins describes river and overland travel, and discuses American social life, including to some extent, slavery. He covers New England and the Carolinas in his discussion, and goes as far west as Ohio and Indiana. Howes C598. Sabin 14450.
