About This Item

William and Robert Chambers, Edinburgh, 1851. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. Complete. A robust copy of this utterly fascinating book. It truly lives up to its name and the detail, information, provision of education and thought are explicit. It provides the background to and the ideas behind, and advice for all kinds of emigrant: voluntary or involuntary. Thankfully (despite the book being very much of its time in some philosophy and language) common sense often occurs: "Some maintain that our Celtic brethren are of a tropical race who will assimilate to the climate of hot countries, and be as sound and healthy a people there as they are here, if not more so. But the supposition is too vague to be acted on, and has too close a resemblance to that assertion of natural inequality which justifies the white man in enslaving the negro." The front pastedown has a plate indicating previous holding in the library of Thomas T Kelly (with family crest of ducal crown with greyhound courant). The same Kelly, on the frontispage, inscribed the book to H D Moreland, who in turn signed the book (dated 1867). The final page has faint pencilled notes by Moreland. The red boards are worn, scuffed, rubbed and marked all about. The spine has wear and scuffing all along. The boards and the spine are yet comfortable and steady. The contents have evidence of contented use throughout. The page edges have user, storage marks and wear. The pages are tight, only very occasionally spotted by age, a little discoloured by age, but by far are clean, clear, dutifully diligent, acutely engaging, companionable, tight, competent, benevolent and bountiful. fk.
