Despite all the foregoing, a nice copy.. Thick 8vo, frontipiece, 628pp + 2pp publisher ad; original green cloth stamped in gilt; a.e.g. Biographical sketches by James Parton, Horace Greeley, T.W. Higginson, J.S.C. Abbott, James M. Hoppin, William Winter, Theodore Tilton, Fanny Fern, Grace Greenwood, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and others. The engraved portraits depict Rosa Bonheur, Florence Nightingale, Lydia H. Sigourney, Empress Eugenie, Margaret Fuller Ossoli, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Emma Willard, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott, Queen Victoria, Adelaide Ristori, Ann E. Dickinson, Mrs. C.S. Lozier, and Harriet G. Hosmer. This copy belonged to W.H. Atkinson, British-born businessman who emigrated to the United States and settled in Ashland, Oregon becoming a prominent figure there. The Atkinson house is on the National Register of Historic Places.
