Description: Dust jacket design by Ely Besalel Associates. This story opens in the Jewish quarter of Cairo in the 1920s. Miriam, a poor Jewish woman, seeks escape from the squalor of her life in pious dreams. She discovers (or invents) signs and portents that the child she carries will be the Messiah. Emmanuel, her son, becomes the joy and meaning of her life, to the exclusion of her elder son, who turns against his brother. The two great influences upon Emmanuel are his mother's fanatical beliefs and the friendship of Ahmed, an Indian Moslem, who tries to save the boy from inevitable disillusionment. This is the author's first novel. Nicole Vidal was born in Indochina, and was forced to flee with her family before the Japanese invasion. She spent some of her early years in Egypt and Tahiti, and lived in France after.
