About This Item

New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2008. First Edition. Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Fine/Fine. 4to. Pp. xix, [3], 4-217. Photo frontis. Illustrated throughout with black-and-white photography. Maps and charts. With a note on scurvy. Sources. Bound in white textured paper over boards with the expedition emblem blindstamped on the front board, blue lettering on spine. In the photo-illustrated dust jacket, price of $19.95 intact on front flap. Signed by Farr on the title page. The story of the Robert F. Scott expedition that sought to capture the South Pole for England, told vis-a-vis expedition member Apsley Cherry-Garrard, a young Oxonian with no experience in such matters. As with expeditions to explore Australia's remote reaches, polar exploration was fraught with disasters. "Ill-fated" was the usual modifier, and the Terra Nova Expedition, officially known as the British Antarctic Expedition, was no exception.

This copy is especially fresh, with no detracting qualities whatsoever. Dust jacket is now housed in a removable, clear archival sleeve.
