From the introduction " Silhouette pictures as defined in this book are the colored pictures that are painted on the back side of the glass. This is also known as reverse painting on glass. They are usually black, but white, red, blue, rose or a combination of colors is also used. The subjects include children, couples, birds, dogs, horses, etc. Silhouettes have been used to decorate dishes, canisters, lamps, and many other items. The backgrounds were usually paper or foil; sometimes textured, tinted or with scenic depictions. The backing behind this background is usually grey or black cardboard.
