About This Item

London: Jonathan Cape, 1974. Very Good/Very Good. London: Jonathan Cape, 1974. First Edition. Signed by the author without inscription on title page. Octavo (20.5x13.5x2cm); 176pp. Photographic dustjacket. Teal boards with spine lettering in gilt. Unclipped jacket; spine has been sunned into a lighter color scheme; flap corners docked, as published. Previous owner's signature on front free endpaper; textblock otherwise unmarred and unmarked, apart from Amis's signature.

Amis's bitterly and hilariously wide-eyed caricature of life in a geriatric commune.

Synopsis

In Kingsley Amis' Ending Up, we meet the inhabitants of Tuppeny-happeny Cottage, a gloomy isolated house occupied by a group of old folks thrown together by fate and a lack of options. Overcome with tedium and decay of aging, the cottagers turn to malice to amuse themselves and keep their spirits up. When the grandchildren arrive to do their duty on Christmas Day, the festivities degenerate into an unforeseen riot.
