D. Landells provides a fascinating look at the great achievements of the Greeks and Romans in art, philosophy and culture which was matched by their prowess as engineers. The author shows how these machines were developed and made. He uses evidence from archaeological discoveries and literary sources and he uses his own experience of engineering to adduce certain arguments from the theory of physics and mechanics. The book is illustrated throughout by clear line drawings and diagrams by Edgar Holloway. The scarce first paperback edition.
