About This Item
New York: McClure, Phillips & Co., 1907. First edition. Ford's impressionist examination of England and Englishness. Contents revised by Ford for this U.S. omnibus edition, the publication of which precedes the UK publication of the final volume in the trilogy, SPIRIT OF THE PEOPLE. In 1905, the Daily Mail called the first volume, "the latest and truest image of London, built up out of a series of negations, that together are more hauntingly near to a composite picture of the city than anything we have seen before. 8vo gilt-stamped red cloth boards; full-plate illustrations by Henry Hyde. From the collection of Ford scholar Thomas C. Moser with his penciled name on front endpaper and his occasional brief penciled notation to margins. Spine and edges toned, tiny split in front hinge paper, otherwise very good to near fine. An exceedingly scarce book, especially in this nice condition.
