The lectures on "The English Humourists of the Eighteenth Century" were first delivered in 1851, at Willis's Rooms in London and were remarkably successful. Thackeray impressed many observers, with audiences including Carlyle, Dickens, Charlotte Bronte, and others of like eminence. He repeated these lectures at Oxford, Cambridge, and in Edinburgh and this led to his decision to go to America the next year. This volume is a Retired School LIbrary Book. Library rebound binding of green cloth, clean and unmarked with light green and yellow design on front, black lettered on spine; corners and spine head and heel lightly scufed. Tight and solid, square binding. School stamp on upper and lower edge of text block, pocket on paste-down. Thackeray provides a look at the literature of Swift; Congreve and Addison; Steele; Prior, Gay and Pope; Hogarth, Smollett and Fielding; Sterne and Goldsmith, including portraits of most of them. There is a Title page, Contents page, and List of Illustrations page that appear newer and to have been tipped in. Pages are clean and free from any markings, no creasing. They are toned. 397 pages. 8 x 5.5 inches. 1923, Charles Scribners Sons, New York, New York, USA
