About This Item

Newton Abbot England : David & Charles. Near Fine/Very Good. 1972. First Edition. Cloth. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall 0715357603 Hardback English Local Administration in the Middle Ages. Many specialised works on medieval local administration in England have been published in recent years, but no general guide to the working of the administration or its main function has appeared. Dr. Jewel has produced just such a synthesis, designed to fill this gap, and integrating classic writings on the subject with the research contributions of the last twenty years. She evaluates the sources of material available to historians, outlines the main tasks of medieval local administration, and the organisation and development of the machinery used. By treating the full range of administrative activities, the book shows how officials were employed in many different aspects of administration - a factor which specialist studies have often obscured. In a very real sense some of the legacies of this ancient system of administration are still nominally operative, notwithstanding the new legilsation initiated in 1971. The book therefore forms an essential framework not only for the study of medieval history but also for the whole development of English local government. Dr. Jewell has written with the needs of the general reader in mind but at the same time her text is designed as a basic guide for teachers and students. 238 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions ,and all types of Academic Literature.) .
