About This Item
This is an inscribed copy of "English Songs from Foreign Tongues" by Frederick W. Ricord. 1879; Charles Scribner's Sons; New York. The book is inscribed by the author on the title page, as follows: "Rev. C.D. Bradlee D.D. from the Author." The book is a collection of literary "songs" originally written in foreign languages that have been translated by the author. From the author's Preface: "In the specimens of songs here given, it has been the aim of the translator, as far as he could, to 'render the rhythm and music of the original into phrases of equal melody;' and he will be glad if it shall be found that he has succeeded in naturalizing some of the representative poets of other lands, and of introducing to favorable notices others of less renown." Foreign authors include Victor Hugo, Voltaire, Petrarch, Schiller, Heine, La Fontaine; Florian, Goethe, Rousseau, and many more...please see the photos for the complete list.
