Two vols., 8vos, vi, 331; iv, 353pp; full blue crushed morocco gilt by Pomey; t.e.g. Important work in the history of feminist literary scholarship, written as a companion work to Kavanagh's previous study of French women in literature. She provides not only biographical sketches, but also readings of the major works of her subjects, who range from Aphra Behn, Fanny Burney, and Anne Radcliffe to Jane Austen and Maria Edgeworth, among others. The first edition is not common.
