About This Item

London: Phaidon Press Limited. 1968. Folio Size. Very Good copy in a Good+ dustjacket. Dustjacket has a somewhat faded spine - is now protected in a pupose-made plastic sleeve. Illustrated with Black and White plates. Bookplate to front free endpaper 339 pages. A study of Greek and Etruscan gems is singularly rewarding. This is the first comprehensive book on the subject since Furtwangler's monumental work published in 1900. Dr Richter gives a representative selection of 695 Greek and 181 Etruscan examples, taken from all major European and American collections. The material is arranged chronologically with an introductory chapter for each period. In most cases an illustration of the intaglio in the original, minute size is accompanied by an enlarged illustration of the impression which shows the design as it was intended to be seen. B/W photographs are at the rear. Two colour tipped in plates to pp10/11. This book is complete in itself as the part two deals with engraved gems of the Romans. . 1st Edition. Hardback.
