About This Item

Faber & Faber, Russell Square, London 1962 hardcover, 5¾" x 8¾" (14½cms x 22½cms), with dust jacket Previous owner's label and name to endpapers. GOOD book in GOOD unclipped dust jacket Father Ignatius, the name by which The Rev. Joseph Leycester Lyne (1837 - 1908) was better known, was something of a stormy petrel in nineteenth century religious life. Filled with an enthusiasm which convinced him everything he did was directly inspired by God, he so infuriated his superiors with his ritualism and revival of the Monastic Order of St Benedict that he found no bishop to ordain him priest until at the age of sixty he received dubious 'orders' from Mr Timotheus. The author's account of Lyne's life and multifarious activities is deeply perceptive (and highly entertaining). LOOSLEY INSERTED: Newspaper clipping recalling an incident involving Fr. Ignatius.
