Amsterdam: [no publisher],, 1763. First edition, further editions followed in 1766 and 1767; published in English in 1769 as Phocion's Conversations, or, the Relation between Morality and Politics. The major work of the French philosopher and writer Gabriel Bonnot de Mably (1709-1785), a series of dialogues with the 4th century BC Athenian statesman Phocion. Mably's works exerted a wide influence on political thought in eighteenth-century France and on Jean-Jacques Rousseau in particular, who, at one time, was a tutor to the Mably family. Duodecimo (163 x 93 mm). Contemporary French mottled calf, decorative gilt spine, red morocco label, red edges, marbled endpapers. A little foxing. A very nice copy in a period French binding, with the half-title and terminal blank leaf. Goldsmiths' 10372.
