London: Reeve, Benham and Reeve, 1849. Book. Fair. Decorative Cloth. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. NB: Page xvii of the contents and page 1-2 of the text missing. Navy blue cloth covers with ornate gilt decoration to front and rear covers depicting a cricket (acheta domestica) telling stories to listening insects. All edges gilt. Pale yellow endpapers. Condition: Fair, spine has been rebacked (not recently), and has remains of a handwritten paper label with titles. Covers are generally faded and shelfworn. Binding cracked internally at the section where the preface begins, otherwise binding sound. No inscriptions. Occasional light foxing and soiling to text. 320pp. plus publishers list. Hand-coloured frontispiece and beautiful handcoloured illustrated vignettes to beginning of each chapter. Good reading/reference copy. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
