About This Item

London: Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent & Co. Ltd., 1915. Hardcover. Fair. Frontispiece by J. Gidley Withycombe. London: Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent & Co. Ltd., 1915. First edition. Fair. Frontispiece by J. Gidley Withycombe. 'Mr. Patterson has felt the lure of the ocean, he has sailed the main and knows the life of the fo'c'sle, and has a collection of yarns by an old salt whom he calls Shivers, and who has already become familiar in "Sea Pie." His style is at once luxuriant, discursive and expressive; it has ease and vividness, and it is inspired by a love of the sea, which he knows in all its moods. He can appreciate its vastness and its solitude ; he has convinced himself of the femininity of its ways and moods ; he has felt its exhilaration and he has fallen under the influence of its call. He tells his stories of life afloat with vividness and with the illumination of many sidelights. As a consequence his chapters develop at times into something of a medley, but that was expected and the product is delightful . ' Review from The Tablet 4.12.15 Green cloth stained and rubbed, spine tanned, foxing on first and last few pages, binding sound.
