Stampp's description of the period following the American Civil War in the South, known as Reconstruction. The author makes the case that there was a much more democratic climate during this period than under previous governments in the South. --- A stated first edition, in full teal cloth-covered boards with spine titling & decorations in gilt and blue. Jacket with three images of a sentry to front panel. --- Evidence of previous ownership by the Denver Public Library consists of pocket, stickers, tape, serial numbers and rubberstampings (including de-accession statement). Also with a couple of incidental inkings. Original dust jacket in mylar wrapper which has been rather permanently attached to the book.; Ex-Library; Octavo - 8 to 9 in. tall; ix, 229, v pages .
