About This Item

London: Methuen, 1956. A near Fine unmarked copy (Fine apart from a little spotting to top and fore edges and age toning to endpapers) with near Fine dustjacket which is not price clipped. 218 pages. Translated by Anthony Powell. A fictional biography of Beethoven written in the form of imaginary memoirs by Herr von Zmeskall, a Viennese civil servant who is known to have been the composer's close friend for many years, and who must therefore have been one of the few people who could presume to understand Beethoven's secretive and tempestuous genius. By combining fact and fiction the author has made a valuable and moving contribution to our understanding of one of the most elusive and remarkable men that ever lived. The author, Carl Freiherr von Pidoll (1888-1965), was an Austrian composer and writer who was born in Luxembourg. L. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Near Fine. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
