About This Item

New York: Richard Scott; J. & J. Harper, Printers, 1818. Later edition. Hardcover. Good. 8vo. [3], iv-xxiii, [2], 26-338, [5], vi-viii, [1], 10-320, [2] pp. Contemporary sheep with the spine in six compartments. Price of $4 on the title page of volume two. Illustrated with a fold-out frontispiece. Two volumes bound as one. The binding's spine label laid in. Evans 44606. The printers, according to American Imprints, produced three different imprints for three different publishers in New York state. Locke's revolutionary work was first published in the United States at the turn of the nineteenth century. This edition nonetheless is still a fascinating example of early American printing. The joints split, the crown and foot of the spine perished, a small burn to the front board.

Synopsis

An Essay Concerning Human Understanding is one of John Locke's two most famous works, the other being his Second Treatise on Civil Government. First appearing in 1690, the essay concerns the foundation of human knowledge and understanding. He describes the mind at birth as a blank slate (tabula rasa, although he did not use those actual words) filled later through experience.
