About This Item

London, England: Penguin Classics, 1983. Paperback. Fair/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7?" - 9?" tall. Trade Paperback in Fair Condition. Edited by Antony Flew. The cover shows a detail form "Feast of Venus" by Titian. Malthus classic study of population growth. This volume contains the full text of Malthus' original work of 1798, and "A Summary View", addressed in part to those who have not read the whole work. Malthus presents the ultimate demographic choice- starvation or restraint. His basic thesis is that there is a disparity between the potential rate of population growth and the potential rate of growth of the means of subsistence. He explores the question of why population does not always outstrip the supply of food, and examines possible checks on population growth. Clean illlustrated wraps with wear around all edges, spine creases, half-inch tear to lower corner near spine. Binding is tight and square. First page has writing on it; lightly toned; some underlining and highlighting and notes in margins--particularly in last half of book. Still very readable. 291 pages with Notes and Index of Personal Names. 5 x 7.75 inches. 1983, Penguin Classics, London, England.
