About This Item

Essays of Eliais a collection of essays written by Charles Lamb (1775-1834), the English essayist, poet, and antiquarian, best known for his Essays of Elia and for the children's book Tales from Shakespeare, co-authored with his sister, Mary.

Essays of Elia was first published in 1823, then a second volume came out in 1833. The personal and conversational tone of the essays charmed readers; the essays established Lamb as "the most delightful of English essayists".

This particular copy, published by Thomas Nelson & Sons in 1914, is 4 1/3" x 61/3", 378 pages. Red Boards with a design impressed on the cover and bright gold lettering on the spine. The book itself is in fine shape, although the paper has darkened a little. But the original owner tried to re-glue the spine and the glue has stained two pages of the table of contents. He needn't have bothered; except at the front, the spine is fine. The back cover has a little bit of scuffing and fading. The original owner has written lots of notes in it, in pencil, so you can erase them.

The original owner was R.B. (Roy) Riddell, who was, for many years, foreman at Goodyear Toronto. In 1947, he moved (or returned) to England and became Chairman of the luxury car dealership County Motors, in Carlisle. (County Motors went out of business in 2007.)
