Essays include: On Dust and Disease; Optical Deportment of the Atmosphere in Relation to Putrefaction and Infection; Further Researches on the Deportment and Vitality of Putrefactive Organisms; Fermentation, and its Bearings on Surgery and Medicine; Spontaneous Generation. "Dirt was fatal, not as dirt, but because contained living germs which are the cause of putrefaction". (Introductory Note). John Tyndall was considered one of the most influential scientists in the Victoria era. His experiments in microbiology and bacteriology contributed to the revolutionizing of the art of surgery.
