About This Item
Since its publication in 1790, this work has appeared in one and two-volume editions and then in reprints from the 1920s on. In the 21st century, several reprint editions are available.
This 1825 volume for sale is Vol I of II. It is in very good condition. The boards are covered in tooled calfskin. Wear appears on its spine hinges, which are strong, and the edges all around show wear with mild corner bumps. The leather has a few nicks, and the title on the spine ("Alison's Essays") is faint as are the other tooled designs there. The inner boards and fly papers are marbled. A nameplate is affixed to the front inner board, and a subsequent owner's name is penned there. The content pages are unmarked, without tears, and remarkably clear of foxing.
The 1790 first editions are priced at from $97 for a copy in poor condition to copies in better condition from $250 to $355 to $1,158. An 1825 6th edition ex-library in two volumes in fair condition, with torn binding and heavy foxing, sells for $132 while an 1817 edition in two volumes in good condition sells for $400. An 1811 two-volume set in good condition sells for $600. Finally, a single Vol I with worn, unadorned cover is priced at $75.
This volume for sale with cover and contents in very good condition priced at $100 seems about right or perhaps below its collectible market value.
