The recounting of the author's life through a series of letters to his granddaughter, Esther. In it he goes back to his life as a boy in Hungary -- being told by his mother to make his own way in the world because of inability to feed him at age 8, the struggle for survival until being caught and put into the concentration camp Mauthausen, and then the struggle for survival in that environment.
