London: Smith Elder & Co.,, 1876. It is put together with remarkable cleverness First edition. In this attractive publication, Burton analyzes Bologna's archaeological remains, the Etruscan language, and the Etrurian Confederation. Burton accepted a consulship in Trieste in 1872. He "frequently complained about the post and long hoped for a loftier position in a place more suited to his talents, but it was a virtual sinecure that gave him plenty of leisure to write. Sometimes he worked on as many as eleven literary projects simultaneously" (ODNB). Burton wrote this detailed monograph during his tenure in Northern Italy. Octavo. Contemporary black half morocco by Birdsall & Son of Northampton, spine with raised bands, gilt-lettered direct with gilt devices in compartments, blue cloth boards, blue endpapers, top edge gilt. Folding table, illustrations in the text; with errata slip facing p. xii. Front joint starting, minor toning of cloth, scattered foxing. A very good copy. Casada 32; Penzer pp., 92-3.
