About This Item

London: Smith Elder & Co.,, 1876. It is put together with remarkable cleverness First edition. In this attractive publication, Burton analyzes Bologna's archaeological remains, the Etruscan language, and the Etrurian Confederation. Burton accepted a consulship in Trieste in 1872. He "frequently complained about the post and long hoped for a loftier position in a place more suited to his talents, but it was a virtual sinecure that gave him plenty of leisure to write. Sometimes he worked on as many as eleven literary projects simultaneously" (ODNB). Burton wrote this detailed monograph during his tenure in Northern Italy. Octavo. Original light blue cloth over bevelled boards, device on front board gilt ("The Temple of Misanello restored"), key motif on front cover in black, mirrored on back cover in blind, spine lettered in gilt, brown surface-paper endpapers, top edge uncut. Folding table, illustrations in the text; with errata slip facing p. xii. Cloth lightly mottled, spine sunned with ends rubbed, front inner hinge neatly repaired, occasional foxing. A very good copy, largely unopened. Casada 32; Penzer, pp. 92-3. Athenaeum, No. 2564, 16 December, 1876.
