About This Item
Catalogue of the Paris Salon of 1865, with the review on Manet's "scandalous" Olympia.
Paris Salon was the official art exhibition of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, the greatest recurring art event of the Wester world since the mid 17th century.
In 1863, the conservative jury rejected to exhibit the modern paintings at the show, and they were exhibited separately at Salon de refuses, which is considered the birth of Impressionism. It attracted many visitors and drew the attention on the new tendency in art, thus in the year 1865 the jury decided accept all paintings. The most scandalous and talked pieces of this year exhibition were Manet's two works, "Olympia" that shows a nude women as a prostitute in bed, being brought flowers by a black servant and "Jésus insulté par les soldats". In his "Étude" Yahyer gives a rather negative review on both works, claiming the anatomy of the latter is all wrong, and proclaims "Olympia" indecent and wishes them to be placed where no one can see (pp. 23-26).
