John Cochrane, traveler, was a nephew of Sir Alexander Cochrane [q. v.] and grandson of the eighth Earl of Dundonald. Having entered the royal navy when ten years old, he served, chiefly in West and East Indian waters, until the peace of 1814. He then made a tour on foot through France, Spain, and Portugal. Returning to England in 1820 he offered his services to the admiralty for the exploration of the Niger, but receiving an unfavorable answer, left England with the intention of making the tour of the world by way of Russia, Siberia, and North America. He travelled by Dieppe, Paris, and Berlin to St. Petersburg, most of the way on foot for the sake of economy. "I joined the Third Army at the commencement of August 1904, just before the first assault, remained attached to General Nogis headquarters until January 17, 1905, and entered the fortress with the victorious Japanese - one of my chief objects to place on record the obsolete method of fighting which characterised the siege - how men meet in masses to settle the disputes of their governments with bayonet, clubbed rifle and hand-grenade".
August 4, 1904 - January 2, 1905, the siege of Port Arthur on the Liaodong Peninsular of Manchuria was the longest battle of the Russo-Japanese War.

Spine is sunned; covers and all edges and corners are rubbed; all corners lightly bumped; some staining to spine. Despite all this, it is still an interesting solid copy of a very, very scarce title.
According to the Trotsky Internet Archive, "This book is very rare and, to our knowledge, been published only once, by Blue Ribbon Books, a now defunct New York publishing house, in 1925.
