About This Item
Amsterdam: Elzevir, 1662. First edition, folio, pp. [68], 606; title printed in red and black, woodcut device on title page, text primarily in double column; nice large copy in full contemporary vellum, gilt supralibros on upper cover, as well as the name of Samuel Lossa, D.D., and the date "An: MDCCVII," both also in gilt; on the front free endpaper is a long inscription honoring Lossa's public service, also dated 1707; manuscript title on spine; very good and sound. Gerhard Vossius (1577-1649) was a life-long friend of Hugo Grotius, and at the University of Leiden devoted himself to philology and historical theology; later in life he was professor of Greek and Rhetoric. In 1632 he left Leiden to take the post of professor of history at the newly founded Athenaeum at Amsterdam, which he held until his death. The book was edited and seen through the press by his son, Isaac (1618-1689), himself a brillant scholar as well. Copinger 5028; Willems 1295; Vancil, p. 246; Zaunmuller 254.
