About This Item

Melbourne: John Ferres, Government Printer, 1888. First edition. Wraps. Very good overall. Important work on Australian eucalyptus by Von Mueller (1825 - 1896), director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Melbourne. Von Mueller is noted particularly for making the blue gum (Eucalyptus globulus) known all over the world, and introducing it in Europe, North & South Africa, & California.

Five issues (decades) 2, 3, 8, 9 and 10, each decade with b&w lithograph plates. Tenth Decade includes the contents and alphabetic Indices to the ten decades at the rear.

Second Decade a bit chipped at spine, missing 1 plate and text of corynocalyx; and 4 other plates. Third Decade missing 8 plates; Tenth Decade missing eugenioides and viminalis plates.

4to, original tan printed stiff paper wrappers, a little dusty, staple bound, some of the staples worn away. Royal Gardens Kew stamp at front wrappers. Scattered fox spotting, though mostly clean and bright.
