John Wilson and Son, 1859. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. Good ; No jacket. 1859 John Wilson and Son. Hardcover has maroon textured paper-covered boards with blind-stamped frame & small medallion. Gilt spine & cover lettering. All page edges gilt. Presentation copy signed on front free endpaper by George Livermore, a member of the Massachusetts Historical Society standing committee, friend of Thomas Dowse, and facilitator of Dowse's donation of his library to the Society: "Charles Gorham Burney M. D., with the respects of George Livermore, Boston Nov 12 1860 -- printed for private distribution". Front hinge cracked, with partial detachment of front free endpaper. Corners rubbed. Head of spine is chipped & missing headcap. Small tear at top rear edge of spine. 1 page has bottom dog ear. A few small penciled numbers on front endpapers. Note in pencil on last page that this is a presentation copy. 2 pages have light handling smudges. Otherwise, pages clean & unmarked. 3 steel engravings with tissue guards. 82 pages. No dust jacket. Includes frontispiece portrait of Dowse, portrait of Everett, and an illustration of the Dowse library. With the introductory address by Robert C. Winthrop, president of the society; and an appendix. Appendix describes gift of Dowse Library to MHS and mentions Livermore numerous times. Small binder's label on rear endpaper: "Bound by B Bradley & Co. Boston". Carefully packed, shipped in a box.
