About This Item
Sydney: Angus & Robertson, 1970. 1st ed.. Hardback thick octavo, dustjacket, good condition (in good dustjacket), black & white photos, some edgewear & scuffs & small tears jacket (reverse side jacket lightly foxed & marked, front flap price-clipped, small piece bottom edge rear flap little thinned), pages lightly toned. 418 pp. This biography by Kylie Tennant traces the early struggles of H. V. Evatt as a student and as a barrister in the most important political cases of the 1920s, and as a pioneer in industrial legislation. It describes his meetings with J. T. Lang, and his loyalty to his electors of Balmain when he was in the New South Wales State Parliament during the years of the Great Depression. The author writes about his career as the youngest judge ever to sit on the High Court and pays close attention to the important judgements by which Evatt made legal history. He played a leading role in the founding of the United Nations, and was an unsuccessful Labor Opposition leader in Federal parliament. Evatt is brought to life by amusing and intimate details of his family and social life. The books he wrote during these years are also examined. This biography is more than a study of the judge, international jurist, fighter for law, and the framer of it. It is a social history of half a century. (First edition: Hardback with dustjacket.).
