About This Item

Minneapolis, MN: T. S. Denison & Co.. Very Good. 0. Stapled wraps. B&W Illustrations; c1930's edition. This is a smaller than trade sized booklet with illustrated cardstock covers and a stapled spine. The booklet is in Very Good condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The top edge of the front book cover has a small triangular chip and some bumping. The booklet covers have some ground-in dirt and light generalized toning. The text pages are clean and bright. There is a tiny nick / tear to the top edge of most of the text pages, just where the bump is on the front cover. This is a catalogue of materials available related to minstrel shows, including plays, songs, skits, stage accessories, musical instruments, and advertising materials. "The minstrel show, also called minstrelsy, was an American form of theater developed in the early 19th century. The shows were performed by mostly white actors wearing blackface makeup for the purpose of comically portraying racial stereotypes of African Americans by playing the role of black minstrels. There were also some African-American performers and black-only minstrel groups that formed and toured. Minstrel shows stereotyped blacks as dimwitted, lazy, buffoonish, cowardly, superstitious, and happy go lucky. Each show consisted of comic skits, variety acts, dancing, and music performances that depicted people specifically of African descent. " (from Wikipedia) .
