About This Item

[FRANKLIN, Benjamin and JACKSON, Richard, an answer to]. Examination into the Value of Canada and Guadeloupe, with an Impartial Account of the latter, In Answer to a late Pamphlet, entitled, The Interest of Great-Britain, considered with Respect to her Colonies. In a Letter to a Gentleman in England. 8vo, disbound, pp. [2], 40 [i.e. 41], [1] blank, iv. London: Printed for William White, 1761. $2000.00

First Edition. Rare, with only one copy at auction since 1924. Textually complete, with lower half of title-page in facsimile (with errata on verso), as is the last leaf, pp. iii-iv, being part of the "Appendix," giving "A Specification of the Sugar Works in Guadaloupe and Grand-terre, and to whom they belong." An anonymous 18th century owner has corrected the errata, and tipped-in a full page of manuscript about the French trade in furs with the Indians, worth 1,000,000 livres, with a breakdown of distribution to the nine named posts from Detroit to St. Joseph. Written in answer to Franklin's pamphlet, it advocates for retaining Guadeloupe and giving up Canada owing to what the anonymous author believes is the disproportionate difference in trade between the two places. OCLC locates seven copies held at five institutions: Huntington Library; Library Company of Philadelphia (3 copies, including 2 listed for Historical Society of Pennsylvanai); NYPL; NY State Library; Wisconsin Historical Society; Detroit Public Library. LCP, Afro-Americana, 3557. Not in Sabin, TPL, Lande, Streeter, Ragatz, Howes, Higgs, Kress, Goldsmiths, Black, James Ford Bell Catalogue, Eberstadt, Vlach, Gagnon, Dionne, Church, Stevens (Rare Americana), or JCBC.The only copy at auction since 1924 sold for $3346.00 in 2004.
