first edition large folio (59 x 44 cms.) [4 (lithographed title & engraved dedication)], 63 lithographed plates (1 double page) of which 9 are coloured or have some coloured elements, some of the views of buildings printed in sepia and black, plus bound in at front the separately published 4-page folio 'Prospectus' with a one-page introduction and a list of the plates, original blown cloth, title in blind on front cover and in gilt on spine, double-spread plate with repairs to the margins, title page and some other plates with some smoke marking at edges, cloth bit smoke and water marked and bit worn at edges.
The separately published, and rare, 'Prospectus' shows that the book was £5. 5s. 0d. when new.
Waring (1823–1875), English architect and artist, in 1843 obtained a silver medal at the Society of Arts for designs in architectural adornments and after periods both travelling and working as an architect, "with Thomas R. Macquoid, .. went to Italy and Spain in 1847 and studied architecture, measuring and drawing the public buildings. The result was an illustrated work entitled Architectural Art in Italy and Spain, which was published in 1850. For this all he received was a small payment for lithographing the sixty fine folio plates". He published several further architectural works, some likewise based on European travels. He also published several works on ornamental art, sculpture and industrial design and, while he worked with several architects and was awarded several honours "he obtained little practice" [O.D.N.B.].
